Service dogs? Is that the equivalent of our guide dogs for the blind? Happy MM x

Independence isn't just an idealogical thing - it can be (and is) a physical thing too.

Happy MM!

Cake,

Not sure if this is universal but at Southeastern Guide Dogs for the Blind:

1) All the pups receive the same basic training and testing.

2) About 10% (usually labs from a specific blood-line) wind up with the blind.

3) About 50% wind up with somewhat "easier" jobs helping humans with other kinds of limitations.

4) About 30% go to cheer up and protect elderly folks at nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

5) About 10% have some tiny flaw that make them unsuitable for any of that but make FANTASTIC house dogs for non-disabled folks.

Troll, thanks for that explanation. Our office raised money to get Hobbes for his owner once he was diagnosed with MD. I think his best purpose in life was to be a chick magnet. He recently retired and received a Citation from the State of Oklahoma for his service.

You picked something we all might take for granted.... the freedom of walking and caring for ourselves. What a gret message and photo. Happy MM. :-)

Great take on the theme. Dogs are not only man's best friend, they are our best helper. Happy Mute Monday, a day late!
