Movie Clip Wednesday – Best Book Adaptation

I was stuck for a bit on this theme and had a few that might have worked for me.  The Prince of Tides (except for that Barbra Streisand thing); Atonement (but I never actually READ the book Atonement but loved the movie) …Angela’s Ashes (too depressing) … and then I hit on it …. a book I love, a movie I love, and a movie that I felt was true TO the book.  Plus it is Oklahoma (go figure) ….  Francis Ford Coppola’s movie, THE OUTSIDERS.

All those star-boys before they were stars.  SIGH!  But the story – Soc’s (pronounced sosh but stood for “socialites”) and greasers … and is Diane Lane any older now?  I swear she looks exactly the same.

Come on now, chime in, who was your favorite Outsiders guy?  Matt Dillon (Dallas) or Ponyboy?  Sodapop?  I gotta go Dallas.

Happy MCW, I’ll be around sometime Wednesday to comment!

I hate to admit this, but I've never seen it! And I also hate to admit I thought Atonement was a terrible movie!

Anyhooo moving on lol!

Ooooo, good choice. This movie had a tremendous impact on me and my friends, as we'd all just read the book in English class. I so wanted to be Diane Lane with Dallas on my arm. Happy MCW!

I've seen this movie (a long time ago) but never read the book. Until I saw your clip, I had forgotten how many famous young actors were in this. I completely forgot Tom Cruise was in it.

Happy MCW!

Great choice Pam!! Did S.E. Hinton write a bad book. I've read almost all of her stuff. Still amazed that she always writes from the male point of view and so wonderfully.

Diane Lane *sigh*. Or as I like to call her "the next Mrs. MRM"

Talk about the young Rat Pack!

Great choice Pam. I remember this movie but didn't read the book.

A very Hot cast portraying insufferable teen angst...

It is interesting to look back at these "young" guys and see where there careers have lead them, and who has fallen along the way...

I've never seen this and I think I want to after your write up. I'm gathering a great list this week.

White Oleander was one of my favorite books and the movie? STUNK. I've stopped seeing movies based on popular/modern novels. I think they are being written now with a screenplay in mind?

Anyhoo, I like your pick and happy MCW!

Sarah, we loved Atonement. But the book -- my London in-laws loved and recommended. Me? ZZZZZ.

Moi: I'll fight your Diane Lane persona with my Diane Lane persona for Dallas' arm.

Buzzy: It is amazing indeed at the number of guys who ended up as stars from that movie - Patrick Swayze included.

Milky: Even more amazing, I believe S.E. Hinton wrote that book while she was still in high school. I should check that as a fact but am pretty sure that is what I recall. I loved her other stuff too -- That was then, This is now ...etc. Re you and Diane ... why not?!

Princess: It is fun seeing all these guys at such a young age. All so eager to make it ...

Boxie: I loved White Oleander (book) also. Never saw the movie but heard it was a stinker indeed. Keep in mind if you watch it that The Outsiders is definitely a film of its time -- the late 70s? Early 80s? so it has its share of oddities. But am pretty sure they filmed on location in Tulsa.

Saw the movie when it came out, but not since. Can't remember enough about the characters to pick one.

Happy MCW!

Have always been a fan of The Outsiders. Probably because the book was written by a then-teenaged Tulsa girl. We watched the movie on the last day of school when I was in 9th grade.
