Fun challenge – design in six hours a garment inspired by a flavor of gelato. Of course, all strange flavors. The short time period did serve a purpose is separating the pros from the pack.
Let’s get started.
Monday was my fave of the evening. His flavor was Cantaloupe. He was literal, but not too literal. How he found the perfect fabric for sleeves is beyond amazing. His eye for putting together the bright color with the pattern? Shoulda won him the day, but alas, it was not to be. He was top two though.
Anthony was bottom three and I can’t remember what his flavor was. Something green and melty. No one liked this but at least he had a thought he tried to execute.
Kenley did what she always does. A Lucy Ricardo dress. Middle of the pack. She needs to step it up soon. Cute can only get you so far.
Rami surprised me. I wanted to hate this but I did not. In fact, could have been top three for me. Not crazy about the color, but the way it all worked together was very good. Putting it into actual use in the real world? Might be challenging.
Mila bored me to tears with her milk and cherries dress. This was a top three? Gimme a break. Not cute, not wearable, nothing jazzed up about this. Hippy girl chic maybe? Me no like. Isaac did, however.
Jerell was robbed for not being a top three. His dress was super cute. Now this one WAS hippy chick chic. Fruits of the Forest? Totally got it with the dress. I loved the bands across the front. Unexpected.
Kara was bottom two with her layered dress that made the stick thin model look preggo. Cute idea. Badly executed. She was lucky to stay.
Michael C once again hits it out of the park with his beautiful gown. Diane Von Furstenburg even wants to interview him after the show ends. He made this ugly, washed out color look elegant and flowy. You might know what you are going to get from him (a draped flowy dress), but he does it very well.
April screwed up royally with her blueberry dress. Too short in the back, and there was no excuse for it. She didn’t have enough fabric and there was no excuse for it. The Mood store was BROUGHT TO THEM this week. Come on, April! How can you buy too little fabric? Plus the dress is AGAIN, what you always do. Ho hum, you need more time to bake. See ya, deserved to go home tonight.
Austin Scarlett also did what Austin Scarlett always does … a grecian dress in Vanilla Madagascar. Beautiful and I loved the length. Right on trend with the white too, but not in a bridal way. But you know what this dress reminds me of? Do you remember the movie Arthur (the one with Dudley Moore). His girlfriend, the one he doesn’t want to marry, wears THIS dress, I swear.
Oh and here is who Austin Scarlett reminds me of this season. You remember him from Christmas when he was on the Rudolph tv show.:
Now, for your viewing pleasure: A series of photos of Lewis Cat helping me watch Project Runway.

What kills me about Michael C. (as he will forever be doomed to be known) is that with his immature, "oh my gosh!" demeanor he comes off as perpetually 12 years old, and yet he makes these utterly drop dead gorgeous and sophisticated dresses. Go figure. I loved his gown. Loved. Even the color.
Mondo's was terrific. I'd wear it in a heartbeat if I were a rich, swan about the pool type. Oh, hell, I'd wear it anyway. I disagree with Issac that it wasn't sexy. What could BE more sexy than a covered up front and a plunging back? Please! It's one of the five tenets of sexy fashion!
And now I will disagree with you on two things: Mila's dress. Hated the way it was styled, but I could easily spend the summer in it. Easy, breezy, pair it with a pair of flat gladiator sandals for day, a little silver slingback for night. Just my style: edgy boho.
Rami: HATED IT! Girl, that weird configuration of bizarre green fabric in the bodice looked heavy and diaper-ey in contrast to the swingy satin of the skirt. And can we just lock that color away in the vault of forgotten sartorial mishaps for, like, a hundred years or so? Blech.
However, you are right ON in your assessment of Austin Scarlett. At least the man has manners, though :o)
The right person went home, but unless Kara can match her technique to her ideas, she's next.
Moi: Hmmm on Mila's dress. Maybe if I saw it in person, I would like it better. Easy, breezy, yes. Summer vacation in the South of France, yes. I can be persuaded. Rami's? Yes to what you said re color but it was in keeping with the challenge. My pics from last night suck and I can't re-look at the detail. I had a good first impression from it. Maybe it deserved a more critical eye.
I am loving Joanna Coles coming in and ripping these guys. She has that bold British forth-rightness that Austin might be needing to hear.
I missed. Again. Fell asleep watching Top Chef from the night before.. when I fell asleep watching... oh, it doesn't matter. Getting up at 3:00 a.m. with a puppy is killing my TV time.
Thanks for your posts, I enjoy reading them before I watch. It helps me understand what I'm looking at.
The top two were the only two.
Either could have won. I do remember thinking MichaelC was cheated last time. I thought he won the season so if he reaps huge rewards this time it is all good.
As for the emotional naivete ... is this the source of his brilliance? Some of the most creative people I know are fragile in a childlike kind of way. Remember the elation we felt at 5 when we had a top score or won the spelling bee or ran the fastest? After the win there was anxiety about being able to repeat the excellence. And if one did prevail, after all the anxiety and all the effort, was the response to be more grateful or more confident?
There are some who face a challenge with an "I've got this!" attitude. Last time out Michael C had the competition won but someone else walked away with his prize. It is no surprise he is less confident as the competition progresses and more OMG with each success.
Michael's dress was brilliant.
I would have given the win to Mondo.
LOL Pam to your Lucy comment about whining girl. She even stated she would make another of the same because of the time constraints not allowing time to design. That meant she was defaulting to an existing design with just a fabric change. Because of that ... she could have been sent home for ducking the challenge.
There is a line between keeping your style statement as a designer and having range. Some of these folks are young and just have not learned how to maintain self and grow creatively simultaneously. It is not easy but I do agree whining girl needs to expand her offerings.
Neither is it easy hosting a snark station season after season so ...
Good job Pam!
xoxo and thanks
for hosting all these seasons.
PS) Did you see the Sting interview this week? The one where he said he and Heidi, "Just grew apart" after having 4 children in 6 years. Really? Wow. I read somewhere else he left because she
declined to be pregnant all the time and stay home more with the kids. Who did he think he married?
@Fishy: You may have something there regarding Michael C.'s childlike demeanor. And I wasn't knocking him by any means. I think it's charming.
As for Seal and Heidi, what's new with these Hollyweird types, huh? They have enough money for divorce not to be a financial burden, but the kids still suffer. Stupid.
Boxie: Watch at your leisure ... Henry is a priority! Sleep is another one! Dogs, sleep and vodka, now that is a weekend. PR will keep for another week.
Fishy: Ooooh, great snarking! So much to mull over with what you said! I think Michael C's reaction to having DVF say, call me when the show is through ... well, who wouldn't react in amazement. I wonder if Austin Scarlett was pacing in the green room wondering why he didn't get such a comment.
Re Seal & Heidi, I'm intrigued by this situation. I didn't see his interview but my guess is he is another one of these men who is doesn't like the success of their woman. Like JLo and Marc Anthony. Heidi has her own success and his star has waned a bit perhaps. Maybe this will cause Heidi to grow more of a backbone and not let Nina Garcia walk all over her in the judging panel.
OOOps--din't watch this week...so I my comments is strictly from yore snark review. Luved luved the grapefruit dress--imaginative an' feminine. I'se ole now, so flowy an' feminine hides a multitude of lost gym days.
Very few of us wimmen look good in lime green near the face. Rami an' Anthony doan KNOW that?? Notice DVF puts it at the bottom--din't luv HER fashion that from the photos on the website
@ fishy
intriguin' insight into designer psyche.
What interests me this season are the new judges/ host/mentor--luv Ms. Coles.
Great snarking PamOKC!!
